Zircar's unique process employed to manufacture yttria-stabilized zirconia cloths and felts can also be used to produce rare earth oxide compositions in the same type of textile forms. The 30 rare earth elements are composed of the lanthanide and actinide series. In 1869, when the periodicity of elements was discovered, the periodic table of the elements was created. At that time, there were unknown elements, called the rare earths. However, they are now known to be neither rare nor earths. The missing elements were later discovered and found to be metals. Oxides of the elements from the Lanthanide series ( atomic# 57, Lanthanum through atomic# 70, Ytterbium) can all be made with this process. Mixed rare earth compositions, such as hafnia-ceria, samaria-ceria and ytterbia-ceria have been made for special applications. The properties and characteristics of the rare earth textiles are similar to the those of the yttria-stabilized zirconia textiles described in product bulletins C-AB, C-C, and C-DE. All of these compositions can be produced as bulk fibers in five different ways, as described in Bulletin #C-F. In addition to the five bulk fibers, two thicknesses of felts and three types of cloth, square woven, satin woven, or tricot knit ,can be made.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Rare earth oxide cloths and felts are being investigated for use as emitters in thermophoto-voltaic (TPV) applications.
